Although it’s not that uncommon to put whitebait and other fish on toast, but this Japanese style toast goes the extra mile.

This whitebait toast became massively popular in the past few months, thanks to the movie “Umimachi Diary”, starring Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagase, Kaho, and Suzu Hirose (they are considered top actresses in Japan).

So we tried it ourselves – it’s pretty easy to make, and quite tasty!

Ingredients

  • Whitebait
  • Toast
  • Olive oil
  • Seaweed, shredded
  • Spring onions

1.Lightly toast a toast bread

2.Place as much whitebait as you like (within reason).

3.Drizzle a little bit of olive oil, and sprinkle some spring onions and seaweed on top. Place it back into an oven toaster for about a minute, or until whitebait gets a little bit crunchy.

And the taste? We like the simplicity of the toast – it’s pretty healthy, and we didn’t add any salt since whitebait has some saltiness already. Olive oil reduces some of the fishiness of the whitebait, which is great too. If you want a bit more saltiness, add some butter and soy sauce.
