For Tokyo’s various districts, Christmas isn’t about presents or goodwill to all men. It’s a full-on battle to put on the most elaborate LED light show, with more bulbs, more cohesive themes, more immersive music, in order to be crowned the most romantic illuminations in the capital.

A strong contender is always the Caretta Illumination in Shiodome, who put on light shows following the theme of certain Disney movies. Last year they wowed crowds with their homage to Beauty and the Beast, realized through a blue and gold colour scheme and candle-like LEDs.

This year they’re upping the ante by taking on two well-loved animated films, Tangled and Frozen. The theme will switch between them every week, and illumination viewers will be treated to a light show set to music every 15 minutes.

The official website provides a timetable for the shows, although it’s in Japanese, it’s easy to understand (the first row of dates are in November, then the one underneath is December and so on). Frozen is represented by the blocks of blue and Tangled is pink.

Disney fans are truly spoiled as one more film makes an appearance, a powerful opening light show based on the new Incredibles film occurs at 5pm every day.

Frozen’s icy world will be expressed through blue lights and I’m sure you can guess which ubiquitous song from the movie will be played.

For the Tangled inspired lights, the lanterns that Rapunzel watches from afar will be used to create a fantastical atmosphere, accompanied by the song, ‘I See the Light’.

If that’s not enough, there’s also various photo spots and special displays scattered around different areas of the mall.
