2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics gold medallist Alina Zagitova reprises her role from last year’s advertisement, when she ice skated dressed as Madoka Kaname, the titular character of the anime.

But this time she’s not skating alone, the 2018 silver medallist, Evgenia Medvedeva has been recruited for the ad too, she plays Madoka’s embattled fellow magical girl Akemi Homura.

The striking new commercial shows a figure skating routine which represents a touching reunion between the two characters. The background music was composed by Yuki Kajiura who also provided the music for the original anime series.

Both these Russian Olympians are known Japanophiles. Medvedeva has publicly proclaimed her love for anime, and even previously skated in full Sailor Moon cosplay. Zagitova became charmed by Japanese dog breed, the Akita Inu, and after winning gold at the Winter Olympics received her very own Akita puppy from a Japanese breeder.

Regarding the new commercial, Alina Zagitova said, 'I'm so happy I can play the role of Madoka once more. It's an extremely moving reunion story.'

Evgenia Medvedeva said, 'I love Japanese anime, so I'm very happy to be able to play Homura. I hope lots of people will watch the commercial.'
