Subculture and Fashion Trendsetter miyako

Whether she's entertaining crowds and getting media coverage for her green skin, colorful face jewels and pink hair as leader of the ishokuhada 異色肌 ("unique skin") fashion trend, making waves with her shark-themed makeup, producing new talents or modeling in unique and creative photo shoots, multi-talented fashion trendsetter, model and DJ miyako is always at the forefront of Japanese fashion and subculture.

Earlier this month at the Weird Bar in Roppongi, she proved this once again by hosting a Valentine's Day party for her closest fans, the centerpiece of which was a contemporary reinterpretation of nyotaimori 女体盛り, with miyako herself as the star.

Nyotaimori

The Japanese subculture practice of nyotaimori consists of serving sushi or sashimi on the body of a naked woman (although a male version called nantaimori 男体盛り also exists) who, at least in the traditional version, is expected to stay completely still and essentially remain passive while almost exclusively male guests feast. Due in part to such optics, the practice has sometimes been criticized as being degrading to the performers.

Nyotaimori reinterpreted

However, miyako's version, which she called dekomori デコ盛り (short for "decorative arrangement") and which drew inspiration in equal parts from the nyotaimori and the wet and messy (WAM) fetish subcultures on the one hand and kawaii culture on the other, emphasized her active role in co-creating the experience with the fans who attended, nearly half of which were female.

"I was interested in wet and messy shows plus making nyotaimori kawaii. Whereas nyotaimori has the model acting passively during the event, I wanted to increase the performative aspect of the show and make it dynamic. Also, the wet and messy fetish is very niche so it's really not for everyone, and the model's face often gets covered up in the process. I wanted to do something that would appeal to more people, be able to show my face and stay cute too!"

Miyako's Valentine's Day Dekomori Performance

As the miyakoSTANs (as her fans call themselves) gathered in Weird Bar dined on sandwiches and sipped on champagne, miyako made her appearance in a very sexy 60s outfit consisting of a sheer see-through robe with white heart and circle sequins and white faux fur fringes over a white ribbed bikini and a faux pearl necklace and matching bracelet, thigh-high stockings with a space motif on a baby blue background and white platform boots.

After greeting her appreciative crowd, she sauntered over to the main stage, a glittering kawaii table covered in creased gold foil and decorated with silver stars dotted with light blue and mauve LED lights.

The crowd drew near, cameras and smartphones in hand, as miyako began to pose and gradually unrobe, setting the stage, quite literally, for the dekomori performance of the evening.

Under the guidance of Weird Bar booker and event director Ms. Kusakabe, guests took turns decorating miyako's body with whipped cream and strawberries, honey, chocolate syrup, sparkles and pastel colored heart-shaped marshmallows...

Unlike a typical nyotaimori where the mori 盛り arrangement part is handled professionally by the event hosts, this evening, all of miyako's fans had the opportunity to decorate her to their liking, thus allowing them to participate and express their individuality at the same time. Some fans created neat lines of strawberries, whereas others just drizzled chocolate syrup willy-nilly.

Miyako posed with her hands, changed her expressions, at times casually smiling and joking, at other times sexy and more focused, all the while granting her fans personal attention with her gaze.

For the final decoration, Ms. Kusakabe brought in pancakes decorated with assorted fruits and whipped cream, turning miyako into a kawaii sweets buffet.

Miyako also took some initiative decorating herself, such as in this moment, her lips pursed around a heart-shaped marshmallow.

And then it was time for the guests to feast. Taking spoons and plates, everyone enjoyed sampling strawberries, pancakes and other sweets, while miyako tried not to laugh too much from being tickled.

When it was over, miyako turned up the participation level several notches, and, perhaps in a nod to a common theme in the wet and messy fetish subculture, shoved a whipped-cream smothered pancake on the faces of a few willing volunteers, even one with his glasses still on. Then the staff brought out towels to help miyako clean up a bit more as she posed for closeups.

After a brief interlude when she excused herself to finish cleaning up, she returned with a change of clothes to interact with her guests and enjoy the rest of what turned out to be a truly memorable evening for everyone involved and an amazing Valentine's Day event which exceeded fans' expectations.
