Doujin “Cosplay ROM” Event Cosnug. 2019

Doujin "Cosplay ROM" Events in Japan

One increasingly popular way for amateur cosplayers in Japan to expand their network, reach out to more fans AND put some yen in their pockets is to participate in "cosplay ROM" events such as Cos-Express and Cosholic in Tokyo and Cosplay ROM Express in Osaka. It's important to specify "doujin" here, which means fan-organized or fan-based. Although the majority of the goods being bought and sold are cosplay CD-ROMs containing photos as well as photo books, you can also find posters and even keychains, pins, badges and the occasional fashion accessory or clothing item catering to niche customers. Another service some cosplayers offer, both as a way to communicate with fans and to make additional income, is mini photo-sessions for fans who attend the event.

Cosnug. in Akihabara, Tokyo

One of the new doujin cosplay ROM events is Cosnug., which is held ever year in June and November in the famous Akihabara neighborhood of Tokyo. Some of our readers may recall our report on last summer's Cosnug. If you missed that one, another chance is coming up this Sunday, June 16th:

Those who are interested can see Honoka's original illustration here.

Conveniently located on the 5th Floor event space of the Hirose Musen Building in Akihabara, just 3 minutes away from JR and Tokyo Metro's Akihabara Station, Cosnug. is one of the easiest cosplay ROM events to attend. Here's the sign outside the building at last year's event. The hand-drawn letters hint at the fan-centric nature of the event:

There are five categories of tables at Cosnug.

  • Costume: Fashion brands with cosplay costume and costume-related items, and accessories. Up to six tables are available, and one of them will be Sucredoll, whose cute China-inspired shoes recently went viral.
  • Women-oriented: Cosplay ROMs, publications and goods inspired by works (manga, anime, games, etc.) geared towards women
  • All ages, men-oriented: Cosplay ROMs, publications and goods inspired by works (manga, anime, games, etc.) geared towards men.
  • R-15
  • R-18

    • Mini photo sessions

As with many doujin cosplay ROM events, one of the highlights is a chance to have mini photo-shoot sessions with your favorite cosplayer. For example, last summer, together with photographer Nathan Gey, we took photos of Chamomile (who, unfortunately, won't be attending this summer):
