With Halloween a month away, many of those who plan to be in Tokyo this season are thinking of doing something fun for Halloween. There are parades, parties and events you can attend, but when it comes to dining options, there's one place in Harajuku you'll definitely want to include on your list and that's the Kawaii Monster Cafe. This icon of Harajuku fashion culture is a truly unique experience, charmingly kawaii as well as delightfully chaotic, and always popular with tourists and fashionable teens. Even Kim Kardashian made a visit.

Already worth visiting year round, Kawaii Monster Cafe is even more exciting in October when it brings out a monstrously marvelous Halloween menu. This year, the menu pays homage to a few "monster celebrities" from the West, with menu items featuring their own unique twist on vampires, Frankenstein and werewolves.

Main Dishes

Let's take a look at the menu items!

Note: In this menu, the drinks are available for both lunch and dinner, while the food items are only available for lunch. All prices are exclusive of tax.

Colorful Pop Burger - Frankenstein: 1,580 JPY

Kawaii Monster Cafe's mascot character "Mr. Choppy" has transformed into Frankenstein! Salsa sauce and melted cheese on a juicy beef patty with buns in two different colors makes this a pop burger even Frankenstein would love.

Baron Choppy's Dark Curry: 1,400 JPY

Kawaii Monster Cafe has created a dark and rich curry dish on the theme of the vampire. Combining the Halloween colors purple and orange, it's a dish you'll be happy to sink your fangs into.

Cemetary without A Name - Cheese Gratin: 3,200 JPY

This dish, which is recommended for parties of three or more, makes quite a ghastly impression with a bread coffin! It's a hearty dish topped with rainbow-colored cheese. Enjoy the white sauce and cheese together with the bread. Don't forget to scoop up the "dirt" (purple breadcrumbs) around the coffin too.

Desserts

Bark at The Moon: 980 JPY

This cute dessert is in the theme of a werewolf appearing on a night of a full moon. With black sesame-flavored mousse topping a crispy donut, it's not overly sweet and a perfect way to finish your meal.

Midnight Pumpkin Chiffon Cake: 1,580 JPY

This is a Halloween dessert that ghosts like to gobble up. On top of a fluffy chiffon cake, you'll find black sesame ice cream and pumpkin flavored whipped cream drizzled all over, finished off with "blood" syrup, for a ghoulishly delicious dessert.

Monster Bongo Bongo Tiramisu: 1,080 JPY

It's a cornucopia of cute monsters harvested from the wild "fields" of Harajuku! Matcha and hojicha flavored ice cream with Halloween-color chocolate coating make up this colorful dessert. Dig in and you'll find a bed of colorful cereal beneath.

Drinks

(LEFT) Jewelry Mocktail - Basil Seed: 900 JPY

Within a sparkling drink, you'll see eyeball jelly staring back at you! It's quite an adventure for both your eyes and your palate. (An alcoholic version with sparkling wine is also available for 980 JPY).

(RIGHT) Shake Hip Shake Chocolate: 950 JPY

It's a chocolate shake with a pumpkin on top!

Asachill as Monster Girl

Some of our readers may remember Kyoto pop singer, fashion model and MC Asachill from our interview last year (which includes a limited discography) and our special feature on the Pontocho neighborhood in which she was our guide. In addition to singing the theme song for Studio Trigger’s short anime “SEX and VIOLENCE with MACHSPEED,” Asachill has produced tracks and music videos with numerous creators.

Now based in Tokyo, Asachill has another way of expressing her creativity, as well as her love of Harajuku fashion and culture, as one of the five Monster Girls of Kawaii Monster Cafe.

Asachill will be at Kawaii Monster Cafe in October when this special menu is available, so you may see her when you visit, especially at lunch time! Of course, the other Monster Girls will also surely make your stay entertaining.
