You may have seen images of young Japanese people in yukata holding paper fans and eating shaved ice or cotton candy, or stopping by food stalls on a summer day or evening, perhaps in an anime, film or Japanese TV drama.

Many of these scenes occur at Japanese street festivals called Ennichi. Held in the street and main path leading up to a Shinto shrine, they are timed to coincide with certain days of the year related to one of the deities of the shrine, hence the meaning of ennnichi 縁日, "related day." The streets are lined with stalls and decorated with paper lanterns. You can enjoy savory dishes like okonomiyaki pancakes, takoyaki octopus ball fritters, corn on the cobb, shaved ice, cotton candy, candied fruits or chocolate-coated bananas, practice your skills in kingyo-sukui 金魚すくい goldfish scooping, hoops, shooting games and the like.

Unfortunately, with the novel coronavirus pandemic, attending street fairs where people gather in close proximity is not a safe option this year.

That's why Sanrio wants you to enjoy the mood of an Ennichi street fair at home with a new range of cute goods featuring their characters!

Sanrio's "Ennichi at Home" Character Goods
