As masks have become an everyday essential in Japan as a countermeasure against the spread of the novel coronavirus, makers have taken to releasing more creative alternatives to standard masks, including glowing masks for gamers, stylish veils for hostess club staff, and even gruesome fanged horror masks.
Now Takebe, a renowned textile maker from Ishikawa prefecture is releasing a mask made from high quality traditional Japanese paper to pair with kimono and yukata.
The "Modern Washi Woven Masks" use a three-layered structure of washi, an intricate style of Japanese paper often used for artistic purposes, and polyester that is difficult to get damp. The traditional paper fabric is said to be a comfy fit due to the delicate material used and doesn't impede breathing.
The washable woven masks come in 8 classic colors (standard sized) for adults and 5 pastel colors in smaller sizes for children. They can currently be reserved from Takebe's online store.
