Aniplex Inc. has announced that a new anime project based on Reki Kawahara’s “Sword Art Online: Progressive” light novels is currently under production. The announcement comes just a day after the series’ latest anime adaptation, Sword Art Online: Alicization, came to an end.

The story of Progressive is a retelling of protagonist Kirito’s journey through the Aincrad castle. The original series covered what happened in some of the floors of the castle, however, it was missing parts of the Aincrad story as not all floors were included. Reki Kawahara intended the Progressive novels to serve as a reboot to the Sword Art Online story. It was first published in 2012 and currently has six volumes.

The announcement came with a new trailer featuring Asuna in the streets of Tokyo's famous Shibuya crossing. Asuna also appears in the teaser art for the new series, where she can be seen with the enormous Aincrad castle looming in front of her. The image has "I won't lose to this world (game)." written in Japanese. You can watch the trailer and see the teaser art below.

Aniplex’s announcement also mentions that further details will be released at a later date. You can follow the official Sword Art Online anime Twitter account or the official website for updates (in Japanese) about the upcoming series.
