Japan is one of the best places when it comes to activities outdoors.

I love hiking and enjoying the beautiful sights of the country, and I find it fascinating how everything changes going from the northern area to the south.

It is always nice being surrounded by nature and discovering so many unique and wonderful landscapes. It always fills me up with energy and positiveness.

Besides hiking, I also enjoy rock climbing. I am still a beginner, but I have a lot of friends that have been rock climbing for a while now.

Rock climbing has been very popular in Japan in the past few years, and there are many spots you can pick from any season. I recommend going with a guide or finding some fellow climbers with experience, especially if it is your first time.

Weekends can be a bit too crowded, so it is better to pay attention to that, as well.

Where to go climbing?

Here are some of my best picks:

Fuji-san (Mt.Fuji)

Fuji-san is probably the most popular destination for either hiking or climbing. However, do not underestimate it and make sure to be well-prepared before starting your journey.

Iwaki-san (Mt.Iwaki)

Iwaki-san is part of the Tsugaru region of the Aomori Prefecture. It is one of the most popular places to hike in Aomori, and I recommend it with all my heart. The view is idyllic, and you will also discover a shrine on the top of the mountain.

Mt. Mizugaki

Another popular place for bouldering is Mt.Mizugaki. It has routes for climbing, and you also can try out the Mizugaki Bouldering Area located in the forest.

Maku Iwa

Lastly, we have Maku Iwa that is also a great option during winter.

For bouldering, there are also a lot of gyms available all-around Japan, and some of the most famous are Apex Climbing Gym, Spo-Dori, Rocky Bouldering club, Headrock Climbing Gym, and my personal favorite, Bouldering Gym Granny.
