Annually in Japan, from late autumn to February, we can enjoy delightful sceneries given by the winter lights all over Japan.

One event that takes place every year is “Minna no Illumination” (Everyone’s Illumination) at the Meguro River in Tokyo.

Megurogawa (or Meguro River) is a popular spot to visit, especially during springtime when the cherry blossoms along the river reveal a splendid view and offer us an opportunity to relax and enjoy their beauty.

However, for those who didn’t get the chance to admire the sakura in spring, you will be ecstatic to know that you can enjoy the trees during wintertime, too.

From early November to January, along Meguro River, approximately 400,000 LED lights will be decorating the trees and offer the visitors a romantic view full of breathtaking beauty.

The lights are also recycled and environment friendly, and they use the waste from cooking oil collected from the restaurants or locals.

Megurogawa Minna no Illumination is an event that wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s power and unity, therefore the name “Everyone’s Illumination”.

The scenery of endless beauty that takes place every year also represents a tradition that many people look forward to every winter.

This year, due to the COVID-19, a lot of activities were canceled or moved online, and the beloved Megurogawa Minna no Illumination, 2020 edition will also be one of the events to be held and enjoyed from the comfort of our homes this year.

The residents’ health and safety come as a priority, and it got decided that the winter sakura will happen online this winter.

This year, participants made handmade winter lights using PET bottles and sent in their pictures. It is such a great initiative and a creative idea that can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
