Every once in a while, life throws us a curveball. All of humanity realized this last year as lockdowns became the new norm. Yet, sometimes something just as impactful to an individual can occur in a more pedestrian way.

Twitter user Janck (@JANCK87776278) is one such person who understands this well. Indeed, he had an experience that didn’t exactly end up as he had hoped:

"I showed my hairstylist the left picture and asked for this haircut and this is what I got."

Just like elsewhere, fashionistas in Japan often look to magazine models as an example of the type of hair cut that they want. Yet, some orders are a bit difficult to deliver. As you can see, Janck’s haircut is far from the stylish do he hoped to receive. His followers reacted:

  • "I was shocked! Lol."
  • “Did this actually happened?”
  • "When your hairstylist asked you to check it in the mirror at the end and asked ‘What do you think?' Even though you didn’t like it, you said ‘It looks OK’ while shaking your head instead of saying ‘I’m disappointed.’”
  • "I thought he went to a cheap barbershop. However, he actually went to a hair salon and paid money. Poor you..."
  • “I wonder what the salon staff said to you after you finished getting your haircut and looked in the mirror.”
  • “You would look better if you used hair wax. Don’t be depressed.”
  • “I’m sorry, but I laughed.”
  • “Try again when your hair is longer.”

Another hair professional named Roid chimed in on Janck’s thread and asked:

"I work at a hair salon. Was your hair long enough when you went to get it cut?"

Janck replied:

"before → after"

Roid was forced to capitulate:

"Well… Unfortunately, your hair stylist is just not that good."

Fortunately, Janck was not alone. Many commented, "It has happened to me too." Some said they even cried at the hair salon when they looked at their hair after it was finished.

Close but no cigar

Instagrammer rianne.meijer recently posted this picture:

"That time the internet fooled me"

As you can see, rianne.meijer bought a jumpsuit online. However, the ad photograph created something of an unreal expectation.

Unfortunately, rianne.meijer seems to have a knack for these kind of...over-hyped situations. She also posted this comical set of pictures:

"Favorite travels over the years were absolutely the ones to France, Italy and Jamaica ?❤️ Where would you guys wanna go???"

Not quite, but almost...Followers had a chuckle:

  • “I just love these so much??.”
  • “Too funny.”
  • “I can't help, it makes me laugh so much.”
  • “I wanna try this!”

Managing expectations

Sure enough, it’s hard to live up to the glitz and glam of superstar influencers and online idols. Instagramer slumgai shares this frustration. She also made a recent post that was popular on Instagram:

"Difference between me and a beautiful woman wearing a headband. I can't believe how far it was from my expectations. My face is huge."

Her followers reacted:

  • "My head is also big… Lol."
  • “Somehow, I look like a store staffer when I wear a headband.”
  • “In my case, I look like I just got out of the bathroom when I wear a headband.”
  • “I cried when I saw the right picture because I know exactly how you feel.”
  • “The right picture is me right now.”

Indeed, there are many instagrammable pictures on SNS. Obviously, however, the image doesn’t always match the reality.
