Japan’s traditional seasonal foods make every season sweet, and now that spring has rolled around, many only have one treat on their mind. Three-coloured dango.

You may have seen this springtime food before. It consists of three dango (mochi rice cake dumplings) served on a stick in three colours. The stick makes it the perfect treat to consume on-the-go, whether that’s at a hanami picnic, or on a spring walk. The colours also make one instantly think of spring with blossom-like pink, a snowy white, and a light green for the new leaves.

Actually, there’s more than one theory as to the meaning of each colour, and after seeing this photo set you’ll probably forever associate the white one with round, fluffy hamsters.

A hamster owner noticed the similarity in their pet, called Mashiro-kun, and set up these adorable photos, starring him as the middle dango.

The role of the pink and green dumplings was graciously taken on by two pompoms which are luckily just the right size to complement Mashiro-kun in the middle.

The photo set, which was uploaded to Twitter, received over 83 thousand likes and commenters noted that the shot taken of Mashiro-kun’s back looks especially realistic.
