Steaming is a healthy way to enjoy vegetables, meat, fish, etc. without using oil and without losing nutrients. Steamed dishes are also attractive because they look elaborate even though they are made simply by just leaving the steamer on the stove.

However, when it comes time to get a traditional woven bamboo or metal steamer, they can be troublesome because they are large, take up a lot of space in the kitchen, and are a bother to wash.

If you feel the same way, we recommend this handy product that allows you to make steamed dishes using your own pots and pans!

We tried preparing steamed buns with a frying pan

A writer at our sister site Grape tried out this convenient steamer plate with a package of frozen pork buns he bought at the supermarket (you can often find them in the frozen food section of an Asian food market outside of Japan).

"I've never been able to get my hands on a steamer before, but this might be a good idea," the writer said.

"I was attracted to the idea of being able to make steamed dishes in my own frying pan, so I immediately decided to try using the 24-26 cm size plate!"

"I usually heat up these bad boys in the microwave, but sometimes they turn out too dry and hard. I was really looking forward to steaming them, since that's the authentic way."

"I decided to see how different these supermarket-bought steamed buns would be in this steamer plate instead of the microwave."

"I put the plate on the frying pan, and when the water started boiling, put the buns on the plate and covered it with the lid. Steam began coming out, filling up my kitchen with a great aroma. It reminded me of walking by a steamed bun stand. I just left it to cook on the stovetop for about 10 minutes and that's all there was to it!"

Sure, microwaving might be the easiest way, but this was almost just as easy to do."

"When I opened the lid, I was greeted with a steaming hot pork bun. When I held it, I was surprised by how soft and fluffy the bun breading was! It was hard to believe that this was the same steamed buns I heated up with the microwave oven before."

"As you can imagine, it was hot and juicy inside. Steaming really makes a difference, making them fluffier and moister than in a microwave oven. My family was thrilled to enjoy steamed buns that tasted almost as good as the ones you get in Chinatown!"
