Today, September 14th, 2021, one of the trending words on Twitter in Japan was #バターアイス batā aisu. かじるバターアイス kajiru batā aisu is the name of an ice cream bar manufactured by Japanese dairy and frozen dessert maker Akagi Nyugyo Co., Ltd., and it roughly translates to "ice cream like nibbling on butter." September 14th is the day it returns to the frozen section of convenience stores and supermarkets nationwide, but only for a limited time.

According to their press release, "When the ice cream was first released in February 2021, it became a hot topic on social networking sites and greatly exceeded initial sales estimates."

Using fermented butter made from Hokkaido milk, the popular ice cream bar "reproduces the rich taste and unique flavor of butter" in a dessert.

On Twitter, those who tried it posted comments such as:

  • "You really could be fooled into thinking you were biting into a stick of butter!"
  • "It was already gone from stores!"
  • "I sliced some and put it on my pancakes! Delish!"
