If you already thought jellyfish we’re sinister enough with their immortality and toxicity, this Spooktober, Sumida Aquarium is holding special exhibition ‘Jellyfish and Halloween’ that highlights the creature’s otherworldly demeanor; but instead of vilifying the jellies, the exhibition aims to bring people closer to the wonders and charms of Jellyfish through their fluffy looks and floating presence that can be considered ‘ghostly’.

The exhibition can be experienced in Sumida Aquarium’s ‘Kaleidoscope Tunnel’, where the 50 meter slope is lined from floor to ceiling with around 5,000 mirrors that reflect fluorescent red and blue lighting along the corridor.
Embedded in the wall of the tunnel, eight Jellyfish aquariums are coloured with background panels featuring witches, bats and pumpkins. Floating around the aquariums against the spooky backgrounds, the jellyfish look like ghosts haunting on a night of halloween.
In addition, in each aquarium will be an introduction to seven mysterious facts about jellyfish, such as ‘jellyfish have no heart’ and ‘jellyfish have a minimum of 24 eyes’.
The mysterious atmosphere created by the floating ghost-like jellyfish and halloween-themed backdrops are accompanied by spooky music.

During the event, the aquarium’s ‘Aqua Academy’ will hold a workshop ‘Jellyfish Comparison’ that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. Whilst making jellyfish mobiles, participants can learn all about the different body shapes and parts of jellyfish.
