Pompompurin is one of Sanrio's more popular characters. Since the good-natured Golden Retriever dog with his trademark brown beret is named after a Japanese pudding, it comes as no surprise that he's inspired many puddings and other desserts in Japan. For example, as we introduced earlier this year, convenience store chain FamilyMart offered a Pompompurin Souffle Pudding and pudding specialty brand Pastel collaborated with the adorably pudgy character as well.

But even if they can't go to a Japanese convenience store or buy a special Japanese pudding, fans can enjoy making their own Pompompurin desserts at home.

Pompompurin fan Abeshi あべし (@abeshi_official) demonstrated such a case in a Tweet showing off "the most adorable way of jiggling Pompompurin" that quickly went viral, garnering over 288,000 likes and nearly 78,000 retweets at the time of writing.

Using a variety of different movements, the creator of the video was able to make Pompompurin wobble his belly up and down...

...and make his legs run by jiggling him from side to side!

Abeshi also posted the part in the video where Pompomopurin is getting adorably belly-slapped with a spoon:

The video elicited numerous comments, such as:

  • "I can't stop smiling at this..."
  • "So cute!"
  • "Hahah, it looks like he's running with all his might"
  • "So this is what Pompompurin looks like when he moves..."

And yet others took the video and posted their own versions with different background music from anime evoking images of "running."

As Abeshi admits in a follow-up post, the original video, shown below, came out last year. Information on the mold, officially licensed by Sanrio, as well as the recipe, are included in the video's description and translated below with a few changes:

Ingredients (makes two molds of pudding)

  • 3 egg yolks
  • 300 ml milk
  • 45-50g gelatin
  • 60g sugar (divided into two 30g portions)
  • Vanilla oil or essence (if you have it)
  • Couverture chocolate (and piping bag or cooking paper for a makeshift piping tool)

The actual Pompompurin mold used in the video can be found here (it may be sold out)

How to make

  • Lightly grease the mold beforehand. (Note that if you don't grease it, the pudding will not fall out of the mold cleanly).
  • Blend 3 egg yolks and 30g sugar.
  • In a saucepan, combine 300ml of milk and 30g of sugar, stir well and heat until just before boiling point.
  • Add 45g of softened gelatin to the warmed milk and dissolve well.
  • Combine the egg mixture with the milk and mix well without whisking.
  • Add a few drops of vanilla oil or vanilla essence if you have it.
  • Strain the mixture a few times to make it smooth.
  • Pop or remove any air bubbles to get a beautiful finish.
  • Remove from heat, pour into the mold, and refrigerate for about 6 hours.
  • Draw Pompompurin's features in chocolate piping
