Japanese Twitter user いしちゃん Ishi-chan (@ishi_20200104) is raising her two-year-old son.

Ishi-chan's mother-in-law hand-made a plush toy for her grandson.

When Ishi-chan saw the finished product, she was grateful, but thought, "It might show up in my dreams..."

The plushie makes quite an impact, as you can see from the photos she posted on her account:

"Here's the WanWan (plushie) my mother-in-law made for (her grandson). It might show up in my dreams. Here's hoping it shows up in your dreams too"

Ishi-chan's mother-in-law modeled her plushie on the dog mascot character ワンワン WanWan from いないいないばあっ! (inai inai baa! "Peek-a-Boo!"), a long-running NHK educational TV program for 0 to 5-year-olds.

According to Ishi-chan, this is the first time her mother-in-law made a plush toy. Since she was neither familiar with the character nor had any paper patterns to work with, she had to rely solely on a single photo to complete the project.

Considering the circumstances, it's an impressive feat for a first-time attempt!

The impactful plushie went viral, garnering over 117,000 likes and 23,500 retweets at the time of writing, and eliciting comments such as:

  • "Yeah...! I can tell at a glance that it's WanWan..."
  • "That's going to show up in your dreams... But I can tell that she worked really hard on it."
  • "Oh my god, I can't stop laughing...! But I understand and appreciate her mother-in-law's desire to do something for her grandson."
  • "It has a certain style... And lots of it..."

As Ishi-chan revealed in follow-up comments, her son was very happy to receive the plushie and her mother-in-law was also very happy to see her grandson's reaction.

No matter what you may think about it, one thing is clear. This plushie filled with grandmotherly love has brought joy and laughter to many people!
