When it comes to picking up a quick and cheap treat in the convenience store, Japan has several types of bite-size chocolates that come in at under 100 yen. Of these, one of the most popular is Black Thunder. Not only are they tasty and affordable, but they even release limited edition flavours from time to time. In 2020, they revealed a surprising ‘corn soup flavour’ and a very autumnal ‘apple pie and custard flavour’.

Little did we know that the limited edition apple flavour was actually a sign of things to come. In a first time collaboration between Black Thunder and Granny Smith Apple Pie and Coffee, the ‘Black Thunder Apple Pie’ has been created.

Granny Smith is known for their homemade-style pies made with domestically-grown apples. This new taste combination brings together their tasty apple pies and the crunchiness of a good old fashioned Black Thunder.

According to Granny Smith, Black Thunder is a particularly popular chocolate bar among males. Traditionally on Valentine’s Day in Japan, women give presents to men, so this apple pie would make a great Valentine’s gift.

The many-layered dessert contains flaky pastry, homemade custard, Black Thunder, apple, and it’s topped off with both plain and chocolate crumble.

This thunderous treat can be picked up at branches of Granny Smith Apple Pie and Coffee, by the slice to eat in (800 yen, with sauce and ice cream) or take out (540 yen). Apple pie lovers can even order a whole pie as long as it is booked in advance to be picked up, or bought through the online shop (4150 yen). But sadly it won’t be around forever, the pie will only be on the menu from 1st to 20th February 2022.
