McDonald's Japan Corporation has teamed up with one of Japan's most famous heroes, Ultraman, in conjunction with the highly anticipated reimagining of the series by Anno Hideaki in his upcoming film Shin Ultraman, opening on May 13th, 2022.

The new collaboration, a first for McDonald's, features a return of their long-selling favorite fried chicken burger, the "Chicken Tatsuta®," as well as a new version called "Shin Tatsuta Miyazaki Specialty Chicken Nanban with Tartar Sauce."

The two chicken burgers will be available at McDonald's restaurants nationwide in Japan for a limited time starting April 20th, 2022. In addition, five new side dishes and drinks will be added to the lineup and the burgers and drinks will be offered in original Ultraman packaging.

Chicken Tatsuta

The Chicken Tatsuta® features a soft and fluffy original bun sandwiching a juicy chicken patty flavored with ginger soy sauce, crispy shredded cabbage, and a creamy, slightly spicy sauce. It's a classic that has been loved for over 30 years since it was first introduced in 1991.

Television Commercial

Moreover, a new commercial has been released online and will air on Japanese TV from April 19th. As a special Chicken Tatsuta® variation on the theme song from the 1971 TV series 帰ってきたウルトラマン kaette kita urutoraman (Return of Ultraman) plays in the background, we see Japanese people from different walks of life waiting for the Chicken Tatsuta®'s return...

But they are greeted by not one, but two burgers, which appear in front of them like heroes.

Fans of the Ultraman series may recognize the familiar "Ultraman-style" font used to write the names of the two burgers in the commercial.

As the two heroes appear, the people rejoice and the commercial ends with a clip from the upcoming film, Shin Ultraman, along with the Golden Arches and the words "Ultra Tasty!"

The atmosphere is reminiscent of the Showa Era, when Return of Ultraman was first broadcast on Japanese TV.

Twitter campaigns in which you can win Shin Ultraman themed McCard cash cards are also being held. Details here (Japanese only).
