Starbucks Japan are so on the ball when it comes to limited-time-only Frappuccinos, that they won’t just release one per season, but treat us to a whole collection released one after the other.

For their first treat of the summer, they released a chocolate banana creation that went along with Japan’s banana beverage trend. The name of this Frappuccino, the ‘Choco Bananana Banana Frappuccino’, sounds like a tongue twister, and this playful spirit is continuing in the summer campaign with some wordplay.

The overall theme of this phase of the summer campaign is ‘Yori Dori Midori’, a Japanese expression that means to be in the enviable position of getting to pick and choose what you want from a range of options. Starbucks have zoned in on the last part of the phrase, ‘midori’, which can also mean green. Put these two things together, and you get a range of tasty green things that are coming to the Starbucks Japan menu for summer.

So in this vein, the second Frappuccino of the summer, which will appear from next month, is ‘The Melon of Melon Frappuccino’. The drink has a mostly green melon base to suit the theme, mixed with milk and blended with ice. But they couldn’t call it a ‘Melon of Melon Frappuccino’ without adding some orange melon too, and there’s a sauce made from orange melon pulp mixed in near the bottom. This summer treat is topped off with green, melon-flavoured whipped cream, and melon sauce.

At the same time, Starbucks Japan will also be releasing some green desserts such as matcha mousse and matcha scones so you can really experience ‘Yori Dori Midori’.
