For people who own pets, one of the things they probably fear the their pet escaping.

No matter how careful you are on a regular basis, you never know what will happen. Sometimes, escape prevention measures just don't work.

What do you do when a runaway dog is coming your way?

Dog-lover and manga artist 石原雄 Yū Ishihara (@K5dbZRmjNe77i5r), author of 世界の終わりに柴犬と (Sekai no Owari ni Shiba Inu to, literally: "Together with my Shiba inu at the end of the world"), a manga project about a high school girl and her talking Shiba inu dogs in a post-apocalyptic world (officially available in collected form on Comic Walker and NicoNico Seiga) knows about this scenario all too well since he's experienced it.

One day, Ishihara, who lives with his Shiba inu Haru, saw another Shiba from his neighborhood running leashless towards him with his owner frantically chasing behind.

He explained what happened in a manga that he posted on his Twitter account on June 5th, 2022.

Many people who read the manga responded to this manga which is surely a chilling experience for any dog owner, leaving comments such as:

  • "I didn't know about this technique! If I ever find myself in the same situation, I'll try it out!"
  • "I tried it on my dog and he really stopped moving and looked at me...!"
  • "Great way to handle it! After reading the manga, I checled my dog's collar."

How do I prevent my dog from escaping?

As Ishihara mentions in this manga, some breeds of dogs lose a large amount of hair during the shedding season, which can loosen the collar.

To prevent escapes during walks, he recommends wearing a harness that wraps tightly around the body. In addition to preventing escapes, it also helps to reduce the burden on the dog's neck and throat.

Of course, harnesses are not 100% escape-proof. Please make sure that the size is correct, that it is worn securely, and that the leash is not broken or overly worn out before using it, especially with larger breeds.

It's the owner's role to protect the life of their dog. If Ishihara's advice can save lives, we hope that more people will read it and share this useful information.
