Nobiko, the amazingly long cat who inspired the Longcat internet meme may have passed away in 2020, but perhaps his spirit lives on, inspiring us to "stretch ourselves" and spread joy online. For one Japanese kid enjoying a playground earlier this month, that advice seems to have been applied quite literally...

Twitter user ごーたつ Goutatsu (@goutatsu) posted this freakish photo of their son playing on the slide:

As it turns out, the photo was the result of Goutatsu mistakenly using panorama mode on their smartphone, which generated this image of their kid with an impossible long torso!

Now he looks like a human version of Longcat, or perhaps a new kind of yokai. Goutatsu and their son had a good laugh together when they looked at the phone.

The freakish photo amused many people online, eliciting comments such as:

  • "For a moment I was like, 'This is scary!' but it's interesting. I think I'll try it on my phone!"
  • "I can't believe how long he is!"
  • "This kid is definitely strong... I don't think anyone can defeat him."

Maybe Goutatsu's photo will inspire imitators...
