It's always a good idea to keep your eye on your food.

While that usually applies to what's on your plate, Twitter user Idachankoba(@koba__ida)got a good reminder that it goes for what is in your refrigerator as well. Idachankoba shared a photo of some satsuma-imo, Japanese sweet potatoes, that they had bought. Normally that wouldn't be cause for any alarm, but they noticed a dramatic change in the potatoes since they had bought them.

...and left them alone for a month.

"I left my sweet potatoes alone for a month and something started growing."

After setting it aside for a month, the sweet potatoes continued to grow and the spine has sprouted and burst out of the package! The color and spiny shape make it appear as some sort of alien or Lovecraftian tendril. Needless to say it gave Idachankoba quite the shock. Many on Twitter had fun comparing the potato's new form to fictional beasts, and leaving comments like "you can feel the potato's will to live in this picture."

Idachankoba will probably be cooking up their potatoes at a faster pace going forward.
