It may seem strange to some, but in Japan one of the simplest but commonly enjoyed dishes is tamagao kake gohan (commonly abbreviated as TKG), which is raw egg topped on hot white rice. The process of selecting and washing eggs is very strict in Japan, so the health reservations one might have over consuming raw eggs aren't particularly an issue. That's helped make TKG a bit of a comfort food favorite, especially for those on a budget. Pop an egg onto a bowl of rice, add a dash of soy sauce, and there you go!

Many TKG fans are revaluating the dish as a gourmet option, however, after Gucci Fufu @gucci_fuufu, a married couple of chefs, shared their recommended method of serving the eggy dish. The cooking couple's recommended recipe is so simple, but has many on Twitter watering at the mouth!

First, let's get the ingredients down:

1 serving of warm rice

1 egg

1 teaspoon soy sauce

1 teaspoon oyster sauce

1 or 2 green onions

Sesame oil to taste

Start by cracking your egg over a bowl of white rice--preferably hot and steaming.

Next, add a dash of soy sauce and oyster sauce for seasoning.

Then drizzle sesame oil over the rice and sprinkle with green onions cut into small cubes.

Then add on the sesame oil and oyster sauce--voila! A luxurious version of TKG!

According to Gucci Fufu, the combination of sesame oil and oyster sauce unlocks a richness to the poor man's dish that will have you asking for seconds. The recipe has become a hit with TKG fans on Twitter, getting glowing reviews as a simple but effective way to reinvent the dish. If you're thinking of trying out TKG for the first time, you may want to start with this version.
