"He thinks he's taking a commemorative photo with his girlfriend, but this is what it looks like to those around him."

A collection of photos recently posted on Twitter with these words has been receiving a lot of feedback.

There's a man wearing glasses sitting on a bench. But sitting next to him is something that doesn't look entirely of this world...

Just imagining a situation where you think you look like a human being but the people around you see you as something else sends shivers down your spine.

If these objects on the bench look familiar to some of our readers, we introduced them several years ago in grape Japan. The man in the photo is sculptor 浅野暢晴 Nobuharu Asano (@asanonobuharu) and the objects are a series known as Tricksters.

Asano has created various types of Tricksters thus far.

They have spurred people's imagination, resulting in various stories and theories.

This time, Asano chose to post a photo of Tricksters as his girlfriend.

Japanese-language social media has been abuzz with excitement over the concept, which seems like something out of a Lovecraftian horror game or a horror manga.

Some of the comments were:

  • "What a wonderful world view. A happy smiling couple lol."
  • "What a beautiful girlfriend who looks good in long black hair and a white dress. Oh, what's that? Never mind..."
  • "I thought they were scary...but now they look cute like octopus wieners." *
  • "I don't care if one of them is not human, as long as they are happy together."

* When they're not done right, octopus wieners can be quite scary.

Other situations

Asano has many other situations he has thought of when posing with his Tricksters. For example:

"It's been a while since our big family got together, so we took a family photo, but this is how it looks to the people around us."

"I thought I was just trying to compare heights with my son, who has recently grown taller, but this is how it looks to everyone around me."

Asano's Tricksters are currently being exhibited in the contemporary art exhibition 六甲ミーツ・アート芸術散歩2022 ("Rokko Meets Art Art Walk 2022") in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, until November 23rd.

Visitors can enjoy Asano's art works as well as Mt. Rokko, resplendent in autumn colors, so if you are interested, why not visit the exhibition?
