Although most foreign visitors to Japan are eager to try some of the local fare, it's not uncommon for many of them to also stop by a McDonald's during their stay. Not only is it a quick, convenient and familiar option, but they have unique menu items like the Teriyaki McBurger® and Teriyaki Chicken Filet-O®, the Shrimp Filet-O®, and recently, the Samurai Mac® burger series, to only name a few.

Another popular draw for both residents and visitors alike is the low price. In fact, not too many other countries in the world can compete with the relative prices at the Japanese branches of McDonald's. For example, a Big Mac® only costs 410 JPY or $3.12 USD (at the time of writing), compared to $5.78 USD in the US.

However, for the third time in the past 10 months, McDonald's Japan will be raising its prices. Following price hikes in March and September last year, the latest hike will go into effect on January 16th, 2023.

After careful consideration of the impact of soaring raw material prices, rising labor, distribution, and energy costs, and exchange rate fluctuations, McDonald's Japan Corporation announced in a press release that it will revise the over-the-counter prices of approximately 80% of all menu items.

This price hike at McDonald's is in line with the general national trend in price hikes across the board. According to Teikoku Databank, households are facing price hikes for 580 items in January, and a total of 4,283 items will see prices go up in February, reflecting a rise in raw material costs.

The revised prices at McDonald's Japan will reflect an increase ranging between 10 yen to 50 yen for individual burgers, meal combos and drinks. For example, a single cheeseburger will cost 200 JPY, up from 180 JPY, a Teriyaki McBurger® will cost 600 JPY, up from 550 JPY, and the signature Big Mac® will cost 450 JPY, up from 410 JPY. The biggest hikes will be 120 yen for Chicken McNuggets® 15 pcs, and 150 yen for PoteNage® TOKUDAI. Prices for McCafé by Barista® and the McDelivery® service will also go up.
