Flavia Carvalho is a Brazil-born tattoo artist who runs a project called "A Pele da Flor" (The Skin of the Flower), which is a volunteer service to cover scars that were caused by domestic violence or mastectomy.

According to an interview with the Huffington Post, the idea for the project was conceived about two years ago when she had a request from a client who wanted to cover a large scar that was made when she was stabbed. When the client was moved by the tattoo, Flavia realized tattoo can bring confidence back to those who were once harmed in such ways.
