Meet Asuka Kamiya, a 12-year-old girl who was given a patent right to a device she's made for her school science project.

It's a simple device to sort aluminum and steel cans. Asuka's grandfather runs a supermarket, and when she saw the staff there sorting these cans by hand, she wondered whether it is possible to automate this process.

Here's how it works - the secret is a set of magnets placed near the top of this device. While aluminum cans won't react to magnets so it drops straight down, steel cans do and it tries to come together with the magnets. The plastic shield guides the attracted steel can down towards the box on the right.

When Asuka's dad saw this completed device, he thought it would be a good idea to file it for patent. And she's got it:

Asuka's only the third elementary school student to get patent approval. Despite being surprised about the patent, Asuka is hoping that this device will help her grandfather. What a sweet girl!
