While the world is figuring out ways to solve the earth's pollution, Kamikatsu, a little town in Japan is helping the environment in a massive way. Aluminum cans, steel cans, pet bottles, paper cartons, cardboard, newspapers, paper flyers, magazines, and more are being divided into 34 different recycling categories.
In the beginning, there was only one villager, Hatsu Katayama who diligently separated trash in such a way. But the citizens of the town could see the environment getting worse and hurting people's health. Without much discussion, they decided to follow her recycle pattern. The town calls their system the "Zero Waste Program" and created it in 2003.
We are cutting, by doing the recycling the cost into one third compared to when we actually burned everything. We are trying to focus more and totally change our lifestyles, to not produce any waste.
Of course, separating trash into 34 categories is tough. But they have every recycle box labeled, and each of them explains what you will earn after you recycle the item. By 2020, they are aiming to create a zero waste town, where everyone can live healthy and to do something helpful for their children in the future.
