The recent announcement of the 89th Academy Award nominees for Best Animated Feature Film confirmed that Studio Ghibli's 2016 co-production The Red Turtle had entered alongside Zootopia, My Life as a Courgette, Moana, and Kubo and the Two Strings. The Red Turtle is Ghibli's sixth animated feature to be recognized as one of the greatest cinematic achievements of its time, and follows the Academy Award-winning Spirited Away, as well as other Oscar-nominated films Howl's Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, and When Marnie Was There.

If you haven't seen it already, The Red Turtle tells a tale of a man stranded on a deserted island, whose attempts to return home are continuously impeded by a giant red turtle. A joint production of Studio Ghibli and Wild Bunch, it is also widely known for its lack of dialogue.

The film has been awarded in 2016 as the Best Animated Feature by the San Francisco Film Critics Circle and with the Un Certain Regard Special Prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. Whether or not it has won the Oscars too will be revealed on February 26th.
