Their latest Japan touring show, ‘Kurios – Cabinet of Curiosities’ is an awe-inspiring extravaganza filled with amazing stunts, original live music and otherworldly characters. Costumes and stage designs are heavily influenced by steampunk and the story takes place in what they call a retro-future, a parallel reality that turns the industrial revolution of the 19th century on its head.

The intriguing storyline centres around the main character of the ‘Seeker’, a man who believes in ‘a hidden, invisible world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams lie waiting’. Acrobatics, balancing acts, contortion, a flying bicycle, and even a yo-yo-ist, among other spectacles, await those who enter the tent.

It’s also entertaining to see members of the famously shy Japanese audience invited on stage to take part in surreal comedic routines.

Right now, the troupe is pitched up at Odaiba in Tokyo. Their specially made tent is earthquake and typhoon resistant and unique to the Japan performance. The space is surprisingly intimate meaning everyone is close enough to see the grimaces that the acrobats don’t make as they execute their acts with finesse.

The appearance in Japan is a personal victory for Japanese performer Kazuha Ikeda, who auditioned for Cirque du Soleil eight times before making the cut. She is now the sole Japanese entertainer in the show’s current run on her home turf playing the role of Klara.
